Kansas Coalition Against the Death Penalty (KCADP)
2015 Abolition Conference
November 7, 2015
First Baptist Church
Topeka, KS

Don’t miss out! Make your plans now to attend the 2015 KCADP Annual Conference in Topeka!  This is a pivotal year for repeal in Kansas.  We tried hard to get our bill passed last session.  But, while we were blocked, our neighbor, Nebraska, passed a repeal bill in their unicameral legislature.

It goes without saying that we are very happy for Nebraska!!  We are resolved that we will not let blocking and stonewalling stop us in 2016.  Besides needing to bring the death penalty to an end in Kansas for our own reasons, Kansas needs to send the message that we stand with Nebraska and the American heartland is behind repeal of the death penalty.  That strong message will have a national impact.

Our Annual Meeting this year will have two parts – the first part is our Annual Conference which will be from 1 – 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Topeka.  The keynote speaker will be Senator Colby Coash from Nebraska who will brief us on the Nebraska repeal victory, the opposition’s follow-up referendum efforts to reinstate it, and what the current situation in Nebraska is.

I am pleased to announce that we will also have the Executive Director of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, Diann Rust-Tierney with us at the conference and Champions, as well.

After the keynote, we will have two workshops you should not miss: One on the regional and national significance of Kansas repeal co-facilitated by Senator Coash and Diann Rust-Tierney and the other is our popular “Ask your Legislator” panel – this year with Republican legislator, Rep. Steven Becker of Buhler and Democratic legislator, Rep. John Carmichael of Wichita.

After the Conference, we will hold our Annual Awards Dinner – Champions for Change in the same venue from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets to the dinner are $50 for individuals or $250 for a table of six.

The awards this year are:

Faith Leader Award – Rev. Loren Drummond, Lyndon United Methodist Church

Student Group Award – Kansas Federation of College Republicans

Community Group Award – Mennonite End Death Penalty Task Force, Western District Conference

Murder Victims’ Family Members Award – Pending Acceptance by the Award Recipients

Volunteer Award – Maryon Habtemariam, Wichita

Make your plans now to attend the Annual Conference and Champions for Change.  Seats are still available, but we are filling up fast!  We are looking forward to seeing you soon!
